FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Iran national team will play in the upcoming World Cup in the United States. He described the team as very strong and fully prepared for the tournament. Infantino made the remarks during halftime of Iran’s friendly match against Costa Rica in Turkey. He observed the players, spoke with the coach, and highlighted the team’s readiness. He also confirmed that Iran’s matches will take place at the assigned venues.

The 2026 World Cup begins on June 11, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Iran national team’s first group game is scheduled for June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand. The team will then face Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles and play Egypt on June 27 in Seattle. Recently, Iran national team played two friendlies in Turkey, losing 2-1 to Nigeria before defeating Costa Rica 5-0. Infantino praised the team’s performance in these matches, noting their strength and coordination on the field.

Concerns about Iran national team participation had arisen due to regional tensions and previous player asylum requests abroad. Mehdi Taj, President of the Football Federation of Iran, and Minister of Sports Ahmad Donyamali had expressed safety concerns regarding travel to the United States. Despite these concerns, Infantino emphasized that sport should remain separate from political disputes. He said FIFA aims to keep the tournament on schedule for all teams, organizers, and fans. He also highlighted the importance of showcasing Iran national team’s abilities on a global stage.

Domestic football authorities reaffirmed their commitment. Mehdi Taj stated that the team should view the World Cup as a key opportunity to compete internationally. Officials are coordinating training camps and friendlies to ensure the team enters the tournament in peak condition. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports continues to monitor travel arrangements for safety reasons. Clubs like Tractor have requested venue changes in Asian competitions to reduce risks while maintaining competitive schedules.

Iran national team will continue preparations in Turkey and other training locations. Officials and FIFA aim to ensure the team competes safely and effectively. Fans expect a strong showing from Iran on the World Cup stage. Iran national team’s confirmed participation demonstrates resilience, readiness, and a commitment to international football despite challenges.
