Iran and Portugal have taken another step toward expanding scientific and technological collaboration through discussions between Sharif University of Technology and Portugal’s Taguspark. The meeting highlighted growing international interest in research partnerships, innovation, and knowledge-based industries despite continuing global economic challenges.
Eduardo Baptista Correia, Executive Director of Taguspark, visited Sharif University’s technology center to explore future cooperation opportunities. During the visit, he reviewed the university’s research facilities, innovation ecosystem, and technology commercialization programs. The discussions also focused on strengthening academic partnerships and encouraging greater collaboration between both institutions.
Correia introduced Taguspark’s innovation network and outlined its role in supporting technology companies throughout Portugal. He explained how business accelerators, startup programs, and international companies contribute to research commercialization and economic development. Furthermore, he highlighted the park’s experience in connecting universities with private industry.
Sharif University officials presented the development of their science and technology park during the past two decades. They also outlined the university’s educational strengths, research capabilities, and expanding international partnerships. Consequently, both sides identified several opportunities for long-term institutional cooperation.
Representatives proposed creating joint collaboration networks linking researchers, startup accelerators, and knowledge-based companies from both organizations. Science, Research, and Technology Minister Hossein Simaei-Sarraf recently emphasized Iran’s scientific achievements during an international education technology summit. He noted that Iran ranks first among Islamic countries in cognitive sciences and ninth worldwide in advanced materials. Additionally, several Iranian universities continue maintaining positions in international academic rankings.
According to the minister, Iran’s higher education system serves more than three million students and includes over 70,000 faculty members and researchers. These resources provide significant opportunities for scientific cooperation and technology investment. Officials believe international partnerships will strengthen innovation while supporting future economic growth.
Artificial intelligence remains another important priority within Iran’s national science strategy. Government institutions introduced a comprehensive AI action plan to strengthen education, research, commercialization, and international scientific cooperation.
