Iran has approved $1 billion in financing from the National Development Fund to strengthen strategic food reserves and expand agricultural infrastructure. The funding aims to improve food security while supporting investment across the country’s agricultural sector. Officials described the decision as an important step toward strengthening domestic production and ensuring stable supplies of essential commodities.
The agreement followed a meeting between National Development Fund officials and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture. Senior executives from both institutions discussed financing priorities, investment strategies, and long-term agricultural development. They also reviewed measures to improve resource management and strengthen national food resilience.
National Development Fund Chairman Mehdi Ghazanfari confirmed approval of the financial package during the meeting. He explained that the funding would support strategic reserves and modernize agricultural supply infrastructure. Furthermore, he emphasized that all financing arrangements would follow strict repayment and resource management principles.
Ghazanfari stated that the Fund remains committed to supporting essential economic sectors while protecting national financial resources. He noted that sustainable investment requires responsible financing and effective oversight. Consequently, officials structured the agreement to balance food security goals with long-term financial stability.
Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri outlined several operational challenges facing the sector during the past fourteen months. He stressed the importance of expanding agricultural investment and increasing self-sufficiency in essential food products. Moreover, he called for new financing approaches to strengthen production capacity nationwide.
The ministry originally requested $1.7 billion in financial support from the National Development Fund. However, current approvals provide up to $1 billion for priority projects. Officials indicated that additional financing could become available through future investment programs if conditions allow.
Nouri also emphasized stronger oversight of agricultural lending by commercial banks. He proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture guide financing decisions according to production priorities. This approach would improve resource allocation while ensuring greater efficiency across agricultural investments.
National Development Fund officials presented updated figures demonstrating continued support for agricultural development. Since its establishment, the Fund has financed approximately 118,000 projects involving agriculture, irrigation, water resources, and food processing industries. These investments have supported production while encouraging economic growth across rural communities.
Officials also reported financing six foreign currency agricultural projects valued at approximately $170 million. Furthermore, the Fund confirmed it has not imposed a fixed foreign currency financing ceiling for qualified ministry projects. Eligible proposals will continue receiving consideration under existing investment policies.
Planning officials from the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted implementation challenges involving banking procedures and resource distribution. They proposed stronger coordination between the ministry and the Fund to accelerate project approvals and improve investment efficiency. Officials believe these measures will encourage additional domestic and foreign investment throughout the agricultural sector.
Analysts expect the new financial package to strengthen strategic reserves, improve agricultural productivity, and support long-term economic stability. Continued investment in farming, processing industries, and food infrastructure could also reduce production costs while improving access to essential goods across Iran.
