Iran produces the S650MC high-strength hot-rolled steel sheet for the first time through Mobarakeh Steel Group and its subsidiary, Saba Steel & Rolling Company. This achievement shows that Iran produces advanced steel locally and reduces reliance on imports for the automotive industry. Arash Hajipour, Technology Manager at Saba Steel, said the S650MC steel is a high-strength micro-alloyed grade. Manufacturers use it for reinforcement parts and chassis in light and heavy vehicles, as well as trucks and trailers. He also explained that Saba Steel now serves as the main hub for producing special steels within Mobarakeh Steel Group. “We began developing high-value-added steels that were previously imported, and we continue to pursue this goal actively,” he said.
Hajipour emphasized that the automotive industry is a key focus for the company. After months of research, Saba Steel’s experts designed the alloy and the production process to meet international metallurgical and mechanical standards. “Thanks to our skilled staff, we produced this steel successfully,” he added, congratulating employees and stakeholders. Farhad Rajabi, Reduction and Steelmaking Manager, explained that the S650MC steel must contain very few impurities. This ensures it can handle heavy stress on the vehicle chassis. “By carefully controlling the production process, including calcium treatment, we achieved a clean melt,” he said.
Mehdi Nazemolroaya, Casting and Rolling Manager, said the steel is a High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) grade with many industrial uses. Using thin slab casting and advanced hot-rolling technology, Saba Steel produced sheets with a minimum yield strength of 650 megapascals. The sheets also offer strong bending capacity, a uniform surface, and high resistance to fatigue. Furthermore, he added that local production will meet domestic demand and allow exports to regional countries. Other officials highlighted teamwork and careful planning. Ahmad Tarazoo Zar, Head of Production Methods, said trial production and coordination ensured success. In addition, Hamed Saffari, Metallurgy Expert, noted that the steel meets international standards. “This steel design supports lightweight vehicles. It improves safety and reduces emissions,” he said.
Esmail Salimian, Steelmaking Expert, and Nasser Ganji, Casting Expert, emphasized precise control over chemical composition and casting processes. Moreover, Mohsen Hasanzadeh, Rolling Expert, explained that adjusting rolling reductions, cooling rates, and winding temperatures produced strong sheets with excellent surface quality. Overall, this achievement strengthens Iran’s ability to produce advanced steels domestically. Additionally, it reduces reliance on imported high-strength steel, supports local industry, and opens opportunities for exports to neighboring countries.
