Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires after a reported attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. Iranian officials said one sailor was killed and another was injured during the overnight incident. The government described the event as a serious violation of international law and pledged to pursue diplomatic and legal measures.
Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Eurasia Manouchehr Moradi met the Ukrainian diplomat in Tehran to deliver Iran’s formal protest. He described the reported strike as a hostile act against a civilian merchant vessel operating in the Caspian Sea. Moradi stated that attacks targeting commercial shipping threaten regional security and undermine international maritime stability.
Moradi argued that the reported attack violated the United Nations Charter and other principles of international law. He urged the Ukrainian authorities to investigate the incident promptly and hold those responsible accountable. Iranian officials also warned that attacks against Iranian citizens and commercial property would receive a firm response.
Earlier on Saturday, Iranian authorities accused Ukraine of carrying out the overnight attack on the vessel. Tehran also called on the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and other international organizations to examine the incident and support accountability efforts. Officials said protecting civilian shipping remains essential for regional peace and economic stability.
The Caspian Sea serves as a major route for trade, shipping, and energy transportation among neighboring countries. Consequently, any security incident involving merchant vessels raises concerns for governments, shipping companies, and commercial operators. Stable maritime routes remain critical for maintaining regional supply chains and supporting economic cooperation.
Analysts believe the latest dispute could increase diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Kyiv while drawing greater international attention to maritime security. Iranian officials said they will continue pursuing diplomatic and legal channels as the investigation continues. Future international reactions and Ukraine’s official response may determine how the dispute develops and whether additional diplomatic measures follow in the coming days.
