Iran launches a pilot program for tourist currency exchange and payment cards at airports. The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran (CBI) announced the program to buy foreign currency from international travelers at airports. Moreover, the CBI clarified that the purchases will follow rates from its currency and gold exchange center. Therefore, authorities designed this plan to increase transparency in foreign exchange transactions.
Under the pilot, one commercial bank will operate as the authorized provider. Specifically, the bank will buy foreign currency from tourists and issue “tourist cards” for payments in rials. As a result, visitors can spend funds easily at hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites. Tourism Minister Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri emphasized the importance of the program.
He noted that the lack of international payment services has hindered foreign visitors. Additionally, the minister highlighted that tourist currency solutions can reduce these barriers and improve overall visitor experiences.
Iran has 29 UNESCO World Heritage sites, ranging from historic mosques and bazaars to ancient gardens and monuments. Therefore, authorities believe that simplified payment systems will encourage more travelers to explore these cultural and historical attractions.
Economists suggest that linking the tourism sector directly with the currency market can generate additional revenue streams. By channeling foreign exchange through official platforms, Iran may better manage its currency reserves. Furthermore, the CBI expects the system to increase official inflows while reducing informal or black-market exchanges.
