President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, said that Iran is an important neighbor and a key partner for the Region. He made the remarks during the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) Forum, highlighting several areas of growing cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.
Barzani noted that Kurdistan-Iran relations are not limited to politics. Trade between the Region and Iran exceeds 11 billion dollars annually, providing a solid foundation for long-term economic stability. He added that cultural and educational exchanges are also expanding, strengthening mutual understanding between the two neighbors.
Security along the shared border is another priority. The President stressed that the Kurdistan Region will not allow its territory to be used as a source of threat against Iran. Both governments have taken steps to secure the border and prevent incidents, ensuring that stability benefits all citizens in the Region.
Barzani also recalled historical and strategic connections. He described the relationship as historic, noting deep linguistic, cultural, and economic ties. He thanked Iran for its support during the fight against ISIS and said continued cooperation is essential to address future regional challenges.
Regarding the Kurdish population in Iran, Barzani said that denying Kurdish identity has not worked. He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region does not aim to impose its system on Kurds in Iran. Instead, he encouraged solutions that respect local realities while building on the Region’s experience.
The President concluded that strong Kurdistan-Iran relations serve as a model for diplomacy. Dialogue, patience, and mutual respect are essential to maintaining stability and trust. Deepening cooperation in trade, security, and culture will strengthen ties, ensure mutual benefits, and support regional peace.
