Tehran’s City Theater now hosts the play Rostam and Esfandiyar. The 60-minute performance runs until February 20. Moreover, directors Dariush Nassiri and Reza Hassankhani guide the production. Negin Zeynivand acts as the only performer. She narrates the story with a modern theatrical style. In particular, the story explains why Rostam defended Iran and its people. Katayoun, the mother of Esfandiyar, tells the tale as a solo performance.

The production relies on detailed research. In addition, university professors and students collaborated to develop it. Therefore, the play combines theory and practice while showcasing Iranian culture and identity. Katayoun plays a key role in the Shahnameh, Iran’s national epic. She marries King Goshtasb and gives birth to Esfandiyar. Consequently, she tells the story of the heroic duel between Rostam and Esfandiyar.

The battle stands out because only the two heroes fight while everyone else observes. Rostam disobeys King Goshtasp, which starts the conflict. As a result, Esfandiyar, the Crown Prince, marches to capture him. Esfandiyar camps near Zabol with a small army. Then, he sends his son Bahman to deliver the king’s message. When talks fail, the duel begins. The battle lasts several days, but neither hero wins. Therefore, Rostam seeks advice from his father Zal, who asks the magical bird Simorgh to guide him.

Esfandiyar supports the prophet Zarathustra and spreads Zoroastrianism. Consequently, Zarathustra gives him divine armor and a magical chain. The chain can bind anyone, even demons. Meanwhile, Rostam, the mighty hero from Sistan, completes the Seven Labors and leads expeditions to Mazandaran. Rostam and Esfandiyar ranks among the Shahnameh’s most memorable stories. Furthermore, it celebrates the bravery of Iran’s legendary heroes.

Finally, this epic performance connects audiences to Iran’s rich history. Rostam and Esfandiyar offers a unique cultural experience. In addition, the modern solo performance highlights courage, loyalty, and timeless values. Therefore, everyone interested in Persian history and mythology should attend this play.
