Iranian authorities have launched a comprehensive conservation project for the monumental Shapur I statue inside Shapur Cave. Afshin Ebrahimi, head of the Sasanian Archaeological Landscape of Fars, officially announced the multi-year restoration initiative. This major project represents the first comprehensive rehabilitation effort targeting the ancient Sasanian monument in seven decades. Located within the Zagros Mountains near Kazerun, the UNESCO World Heritage site attracts international archaeological interest.

Initial operations will begin with advanced digital documentation using specialized drone surveys, high-resolution photogrammetry, and perimeter cameras. Consequently, technical teams can analyze structural vulnerabilities before erecting protective scaffolding around the seven-meter monument. Furthermore, specialists will install a transparent polycarbonate barrier to prevent visitors from touching fragile carved surfaces. Teams will also systematically collect, catalog, and conserve scattered historical stone fragments surrounding the main base.

Historical records indicate that the colossal sculpture collapsed following the fall of the Sasanian Empire centuries ago. Subsequently, military engineers re-erected the fallen monument during the second Pahlavi period using supportive concrete lower legs. However, recent scientific evaluations confirm that environmental exposure and structural aging now require urgent conservation interventions. Specialists expect the initial assessment phase to take three months, while the overall conservation process is expected to require two years.

This ambitious preservation program safeguards an irreplaceable piece of ancient Iranian engineering and artistic heritage. By securing structural stability inside the cave environment, authorities aim to support sustainable cultural tourism across Fars province. Ultimately, the meticulous restoration project will help ensure that future generations can safely experience this monumental ancient masterpiece.
