Archaeologists have recently uncovered an Ilkhanid cemetery near the Soltanieh Dome in northwestern Iran. This Ilkhanid cemetery contains underground tombs believed to belong to the Mongol Ilkhan royal family. Consequently, officials say the discovery could provide valuable insight into 13th and 14th-century Mongol history, culture, and religious practices.

Abolfazl Ali, director of the Soltanieh Site, announced the finding on Sunday evening. He cited the provincial Cultural Heritage Organization, which led the excavation in the Abvab Al-Bar area. According to Ali, the tombs and skeletons most likely belong to members of Oljaitu’s family, the eighth Ilkhan ruler. Moreover, the burial site reportedly includes one of his wives and several of his children.

Experts suggest the discovery is significant because it complements the Soltanieh Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, the dome, constructed under Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh’s order, is the third-largest brick dome in the world. It was designed by Fazlullah Hamedani, a prominent Ilkhanid minister, and continues to stand as a landmark of Iranian architectural achievement. The dome’s proximity to the cemetery strengthens the historical and cultural context of the site.

The head of the excavation emphasized that the site may shed light on Mongol-era customs, burial rituals, and religious practices. Furthermore, archaeologists noted that the artifacts and items found within the tombs could help reconstruct daily life and cultural traditions during that period. The discovery may also illuminate family structures and the roles of women and children in Ilkhanid society.

This excavation marks one of the few instances where a royal Ilkhanid cemetery has been systematically studied. Therefore, officials believe that detailed analysis of the remains could provide historians with clearer timelines of Mongol rule in Iran. The findings also have the potential to attract cultural tourism and boost heritage preservation efforts in Zanjan province.

Abolfazl Ali highlighted that the cemetery’s location adjacent to the Soltanieh Dome reinforces the area’s historical importance. Consequently, archaeologists plan to continue excavations to uncover more tombs and artifacts. Additionally, the team intends to document the findings carefully for future research, exhibitions, and educational programs.

The discovery of the Ilkhanid cemetery illustrates Iran’s rich historical heritage and the enduring legacy of the Mongol era. Researchers anticipate that ongoing studies will reveal further details about the royal family’s life, beliefs, and societal roles. Ultimately, this site offers a rare window into the history and culture of a key period in Iran’s past.
