Iran has appointed Mohammad Reza Raeuf Sheibani as its new ambassador to Lebanon, replacing Mojtaba Amani, who held the post since 2022. Sheibani brings extensive diplomatic experience in the Middle East and North Africa. He previously served as Iran’s ambassador to Syria and Libya, where he managed complex political and security challenges.

Sheibani also worked in Lebanon during the 33-day conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. He represented Iran and coordinated diplomatic efforts under difficult conditions. His appointment reflects Tehran’s ongoing commitment to Lebanon, particularly in political, economic, and security matters. Observers say his selection signals Iran’s intent to maintain an active presence in Beirut amid regional uncertainty.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Sheibani’s experience equips him to navigate Lebanon’s complex political landscape. Lebanon faces political instability, worsening economic crises, and regional tensions. Strong diplomatic ties with Iran remain crucial. Amani strengthened economic relations and maintained consistent political dialogue during his tenure. Sheibani will build on this foundation and expand Iran’s initiatives in Beirut while keeping close contact with key Lebanese political groups.

Meanwhile, former Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani has become Iran’s ambassador to Algeria. He brings strong experience in diplomatic communications and public relations. Analysts say his appointment will reinforce Iran’s engagement in North Africa. These moves reflect Tehran’s broader strategy to place experienced diplomats across the Middle East and North Africa, maintaining and deepening its international partnerships.

Analysts note that Sheibani’s role could play a central part in supporting Lebanon’s stability. He could also boost cooperation in energy, trade, and regional security. Drawing on his experience, he will continue his predecessor’s initiatives while actively advancing Iran’s wider strategic interests across the region. Observers highlight that his knowledge of Lebanon’s internal politics and regional alliances will allow him to respond effectively to evolving challenges and strengthen Iran’s influence.

With this appointment, Iran underscores its strong commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement in Lebanon. Sheibani inherits a range of responsibilities and opportunities, from strengthening political and economic ties to supporting regional security initiatives. His tenure will likely play a significant role in shaping the trajectory of Iran-Lebanon relations during a critical period for the country and the wider region, influencing both bilateral cooperation and broader strategic dynamics.
