Iran has strongly condemned the recent surge of Sudan violence in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. Specifically, Tehran expressed concern over the killing of civilians and the widespread destruction of essential infrastructure. Moreover, Iran called on all parties to halt attacks on innocent people immediately.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, dangerous movements are threatening to divide Sudan further. Therefore, he emphasized the need to respect the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Furthermore, Baghaei urged the protection of civilian lives as a top priority.
The escalation comes after Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced the army’s withdrawal from El Fasher. He explained that this decision followed systematic destruction and killings carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who had earlier seized control of the provincial capital. Consequently, the military prioritized civilian safety over maintaining a presence in the city.
In a televised address, al-Burhan stated that local military and security leaders agreed on the necessity of leaving the city. He added, “The military leadership in El Fasher determined withdrawal was essential after the systematic destruction and crimes against civilians.” He also affirmed that Sudan’s army remains capable of achieving successive victories in alignment with the will of the people.
Moreover, al-Burhan criticized international inaction, noting that crimes in El Fasher violate Security Council resolutions and international norms. “The world watches without accountability,” he warned, underscoring the urgency for international attention.
Experts note that Sudan violence has worsened due to ongoing clashes between rival military factions. As a result, tens of thousands of residents have been displaced, while access to food, healthcare, and basic services has significantly decreased.
