The Department of Environment of Iran (DOE) wrote to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It cited multiple airstrikes targeting nuclear power plants since the U.S.-Israeli military campaign began. In particular, three strikes hit the Bushehr nuclear plant, while other facilities also faced attacks. The DOE described these strikes as illegal and dangerous.
Iranian officials stressed that military action against active nuclear sites violates International Atomic Energy Agency regulations. Furthermore, it breaches international humanitarian law. Experts warned that attacks can trigger radiation leaks, long-term ecological damage, and contamination of key waterways.
The DOE highlighted risks to the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. In addition, it estimated the carbon footprint of the first two weeks of conflict equals the annual emissions of 60 countries. Officials criticized global institutions for issuing mild statements instead of clear condemnation. As a result, inaction could worsen environmental and public trust crises.
