Radiation risk looms over the entire Middle East. Specifically, Iran’s foreign minister has issued an urgent warning, he says US-Israeli airstrikes target civilian nuclear facilities. These include the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Consequently, an attack could release radioactive material. Such a disaster would harm millions of people. In short, radiation risk looms as a direct consequence of these strikes.
Therefore, Abbas Araghchi sent letters to the UN on Saturday. He addressed the secretary general and the Security Council. In these letters, he stated the strikes are unlawful. For instance, Iran’s nuclear sites serve only peaceful purposes. They also operate under IAEA safeguards. Nevertheless, the attacks continue without any UN condemnation.
As a result, these assaults create a grave humanitarian threat. Radioactive contamination would not respect borders. Thus, the entire region would suffer. Environmental damage could last for decades. Accordingly, Araghchi warned the world cannot ignore this danger. Again, radiation risk looms over every neighboring country.
Iran has faced two foreign wars in nine months. The United States and Israel lead these aggressions. However, the US holds the NPT treaty. Yet it still attacks. In contrast, Israel remains outside the NPT completely. Both nations have bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities repeatedly. Consequently, the UN Security Council has failed to act. The IAEA board has also stayed silent. In fact, not even a condemnation has emerged.
Now US officials speak openly. For example, one senior official called international humanitarian law stupid. Another said Bushehr is not off the table. Therefore, this recklessness follows UN inaction. The aggressors grow bolder each day. As a result, Araghchi stated this damages UN credibility. The entire safeguards system now faces collapse.
The attacks began on February 28. That campaign was large-scale and unprovoked. It assassinated Iran’s leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. It also killed many military commanders and civilians. Similarly, the strikes hit both military and civilian sites. Consequently, many people have died. Infrastructure damage remains widespread.
The Bushehr plant sits dangerously close to strike zones. Repeated attacks occur in its vicinity. Thus, this proximity represents an intolerable escalation. Even a near miss could cause a radiological release. For instance, such an event would force mass evacuations. It would also poison farmland and water supplies.
In response, Iran’s armed forces have acted forcefully. They launched missile and drone operations. These targeted U.S. interests across West Asia. They also struck Israeli positions in occupied territories. Still, the foreign minister insists diplomacy remains possible. However, he says the UN must act now.
If the Security Council remains indifferent, trust will vanish. Member states may lose confidence in the UN. The IAEA and non-proliferation rules will weaken further. Therefore, Araghchi concluded that inaction will not stop at Iran. The consequences will spread globally. Future talks require accountability first. Otherwise, no nation will feel safe.
