Iranian short film “Sheep” won first runner-up at the 11th Asian World Film Festival in California. Consequently, it highlights the global rise of Iranian short film productions. The festival celebrated winners on Sunday at the Culver Theater in Culver City.
The 13-minute film follows Rose, a young girl who lives with her mother in Tehran. When she discovers her neighbors sacrificing sheep in a traditional ritual, she decides to save as many as possible. The cast includes Rose Tabatabaie and Gelavij Alam.
Hadi Babaeifar, 42, discovered his passion for cinema at age 20 after buying his first camera. Moreover, he studied film criticism and acting at the Karnameh Institute of Arts and Culture. Meanwhile, he worked as a photographer on multiple feature film sets. Later, he earned a directing degree in Tehran, graduating in 2018.
“Sheep” is the second film in Babaeifar’s animal-themed trilogy. His debut short, “Deer,” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2022. Therefore, the trilogy reflects his focus on combining social commentary with cinematic storytelling.
The Asian World Film Festival Short Film Program promotes Asian filmmakers and supports their work globally. In addition, it provides a platform for emerging directors to gain recognition. Furthermore, it encourages diverse voices and innovative storytelling in the film industry.
Babaeifar received a trophy, a scholarship to the New York Film Academy, a $3,000 set-rental credit from Our Home Studios, and a DCP from The DCP Company. Festival organizers added that such recognition helps filmmakers reach international audiences.
Experts note that Iranian short film productions are gaining attention due to their cultural depth and unique storytelling. Consequently, “Sheep” shows that local stories can appeal to global viewers. In addition, this success may inspire other young Iranian filmmakers to pursue creative projects.
Babaeifar plans to complete the final installment of his animal trilogy. In the future, his achievements at AWFF may lead to international collaborations and wider distribution.
