Iran national football team are placed in Pot 2 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw. This positioning gives the team a strategic advantage ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament. FIFA finalized all World Cup pots on November 25, setting the procedure for forming 12 groups for the June 11 to July 19 event. The official draw will take place on December 5, and fans will finally see the full group lineup.

According to FIFA, the top four teams in the latest men’s rankings, if they finish first in their groups, will avoid each other until the semifinals.The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first World Cup hosted by three countries.

Pot 1 features top football nations, including Canada, Mexico, USA, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Iran joins Pot 2 with Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, and Australia.

Pot 3 includes Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa. Pot 4 contains Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, and winners of European and FIFA playoff tournaments.

So far, 42 teams have secured their places in the tournament. The remaining six spots will be decided in March through European and global playoffs. All six teams will enter from the lowest-ranked pot, which completes the 48-team field.

Analysts say Iran Pot 2 placement gives the team a more manageable group-stage path and increases chances of advancing. Officials in Tehran praised the announcement, saying it motivates players and strengthens tournament preparation.

Furthermore, fans will watch closely as Iran prepares to compete on the global stage. Being in Pot 2 raises the team’s visibility and builds hopes for a historic World Cup performance.
