Iran announced a major leadership transition after Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader, placed him at the top of the Islamic Republic. Officials confirmed the appointment following a decisive vote by the country’s clerical leadership council. Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the nation’s third supreme leader. The council released the decision on Sunday after an emergency meeting in Tehran. Members voted shortly after the death of longtime leader Ali Khamenei.

The leadership change occurred during a period of growing military tension. A joint aerial campaign by the United States and Israel struck targets across Iran on February 28. The attacks killed several senior military officials and political figures. Ali Khamenei died during those strikes after leading Iran since 1989. His death created an urgent leadership gap within the political system. Therefore, the Assembly of Experts acted quickly to select a successor.

The Assembly includes 88 clerics responsible for choosing the supreme leader. This body holds the highest authority in the leadership selection process. Members reported extensive deliberations before reaching their final decision. Officials said representatives strongly supported the new appointment. They also urged citizens to maintain unity during the transition period. In addition, they asked religious scholars and political leaders to support the new leadership.

The Mojtaba Khamenei as leader occurred despite wartime pressure and security threats. Iranian authorities said attacks targeted offices connected to the Assembly during the conflict. Mojtaba Khamenei, age 56, held influence within Iran’s political system for many years. However, he never occupied a formal government position. Instead, he worked closely within the office of the supreme leader.

Analysts often described him as a key coordinator of internal political networks. His close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps strengthened his influence. However, the decision sparked debate among political observers. Critics argue the move resembles hereditary succession in Iran’s leadership.

The 1979 Islamic Revolution rejected monarchy and dynastic rule. Critics, therefore, question the symbolism of the transition of the Mojtaba Khamenei leader. Meanwhile, analysts expect policy continuity under the new leadership. Many believe Iran will maintain its current regional strategy. The era of Mojtaba Khamenei now begins during a period of intense geopolitical pressure and uncertainty.
