No Iranian universities appear in the Times Impact Rankings 2026 after changes to the participation process. The absence marks a sharp contrast with the previous edition, when 34 Iranian institutions earned places in the global sustainability rankings.

The latest rankings introduced new participation requirements for universities seeking evaluation. Institutions now must join the sustainability network and submit information directly through the updated reporting framework. Consequently, universities that did not complete these steps could not appear in the final results.

Last year, 34 Iranian universities participated in the global assessment. However, none appeared in the 2026 edition after the revised submission rules took effect. The development has attracted attention across Iran’s higher education sector.

Some domestic reports described the outcome as Iran’s removal from the rankings. However, available information does not confirm that the ranking organization deliberately excluded Iranian universities. Instead, uncertainty remains over whether institutions participated under the new requirements.

The Times Impact Rankings evaluate universities according to their contributions toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The assessment measures performance across research, education, outreach, environmental responsibility, and institutional governance. Therefore, many universities consider the rankings an important international benchmark.

Universities often use strong ranking results to strengthen their global reputation. Higher positions can also support international partnerships, student recruitment, and academic research cooperation. Consequently, participation has become increasingly valuable for institutions seeking greater international recognition.

Higher education analysts note that ranking methodologies continue evolving to improve transparency and reporting standards. Therefore, universities must regularly adapt their data collection and submission processes. Institutions that fail to meet updated requirements may lose visibility despite maintaining similar academic performance.

Iranian universities continue participating in several international academic activities despite facing changing evaluation standards. Education experts say institutions may review the new framework before deciding whether to participate in future editions.

Looking ahead, universities in Iran could return to future rankings by meeting the revised participation conditions. Academic leaders will likely assess the updated process while considering its benefits for international cooperation, research visibility, and institutional reputation.
