Sharifeh Mohammadi, the Iranian labor activist, has had her death sentence replaced with a long-term prison term. Sharifeh Mohammadi’s lawyer announced on social media that the head of the judiciary approved the reduction. Consequently, her sentence now stands at thirty years, representing the maximum legal prison term for her charges.

The lawyer highlighted that the immediate danger has decreased. However, her legal team continues to push for a retrial and submit appeals under Article 477. They aim to overturn her conviction and achieve full acquittal from the “bagi” charge, meaning rebellion. These efforts illustrate ongoing judicial and activist challenges in Iran.

Sharifeh Mohammadi was arrested on December 5, 2023, at her home in Rasht when Ministry of Intelligence agents arrived. She initially remained in Rasht, but authorities transferred her to Sanandaj prison on December 30, 2023. Reports indicate that interrogators physically abused her while pressuring her for forced confessions. Fellow prisoners noticed bruises under her eyes, severe redness and swelling in her eyes, and facial inflammation.

Her trial began on June 9, 2024, at the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht. The court accused her of propaganda against the state and rebellion. On July 5, 2024, the court sentenced her to death, citing her alleged membership in a labor coordination committee. Authorities claimed the group had links to a banned political organization, using this as justification for the charges.

Although the Supreme Court overturned the sentence and sent the case back for reconsideration, the lower court reissued the death penalty on February 14, 2025. Meanwhile, Mohammadi wrote a letter to her child, revealing she learned about the sentence through her spouse. She questioned how her actions could justify such a severe punishment. She described the courtroom as silent, suffocating, and oppressive under the weight of injustice.

Furthermore, labor unions, political prisoners, student groups, and human rights campaigns repeatedly demanded her release. They emphasized justice, human rights, and the protection of Sharifeh Mohammadi’s safety. Consequently, her case now receives both domestic and international attention.

These ongoing efforts highlight growing concern over her treatment. At the same time, they emphasize the importance of legal fairness, judicial accountability, and the rights of activists like Sharifeh Mohammadi. Her story continues to inspire both legal and human rights advocacy across the region.
