Iran has called on Brazil to oppose a new IAEA resolution targeting Tehran. The Iranian foreign ministry emphasized that this IAEA resolution is politically motivated and undermines international cooperation. During a phone call, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. The discussion focused on bilateral relations and ongoing international developments. Both officials highlighted the need to expand collaboration across multiple sectors and strengthen partnerships within international organizations.

Araqchi stressed the importance of preventing some countries from misusing international institutions to pressure developing nations. He described the initiative by the European troika – consisting of the UK, France, and Germany – as improper. According to him, the move seeks to pass an IAEA resolution against Iran that continues the political approach of the EU3 and the United States at the UN Security Council.

The Iranian minister criticized the European proposal, calling it irresponsible, provocative, and unjustifiable. He warned that pursuing such actions will further damage the IAEA’s technical and professional credibility. He also urged all IAEA Board of Governors members to oppose the resolution, which Iran considers illegal.

Brazil is currently one of the 35 members of the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2025–2026 term. Araqchi specifically urged Brazil to use its position to reject the European-backed measure. He emphasized that member states must act to protect the integrity of international institutions.

The European troika, together with the United States, submitted a draft resolution to this week’s IAEA Board of Governors meeting. The resolution demands that Iran provide explanations about its enriched uranium stock and access to nuclear sites targeted during military strikes in June. Iran regards these demands as a continuation of previous attempts to pressure the country unjustly.

Iran’s call highlights growing tensions within the IAEA as some nations push for measures Tehran considers political. Araqchi emphasized that the IAEA resolution should not be used as a tool for political agendas. He reiterated that cooperation, transparency, and adherence to international norms must guide the Board’s actions.

As the IAEA Board of Governors prepares to discuss the draft resolution, Iran’s appeal to Brazil underscores its broader strategy to seek support from countries resisting what it calls politically motivated pressures. The focus remains on maintaining the credibility and neutrality of international nuclear oversight.
