Iranian authorities successfully contained the Elit wildfire in Mazandaran’s forests after several weeks of intense firefighting. The wildfire threatened the ancient Hyrcanian Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Therefore, experts stress that controlling it protected Iran’s unique biodiversity.
Reza Aflatouni, head of Iran’s Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organisation, announced on Monday that the main phase of the Elit wildfire is now under control. However, firefighting teams continue to monitor isolated smoldering areas closely. In addition, Aflatouni refused to provide detailed damage estimates, explaining that authorities must assess losses carefully before reporting.
The Elit wildfire reignited on 15 November, spreading across large sections of the Hyrcanian Forests. These forests, dating back 25 to 50 million years, host over 3,200 plant species and endangered wildlife, including Persian leopards. As a result, authorities describe the forest as a critical natural and cultural asset, making its protection a top priority.
Mazandaran Governor Mahdi Younesi reported that firefighting crews have destroyed around eight hectares so far. Meanwhile, local residents claimed the fire continued without interruption for weeks. Officials, however, argued that two separate fires occurred 10 to 15 days apart.
The wildfire exposed weaknesses in environmental management and public awareness. Experts warn that continued neglect could destroy large portions of Iran’s natural heritage and cause long-term social and economic damage. Therefore, the Elit wildfire highlights the urgent need for improved firefighting resources and forest management strategies.
Firefighting teams worked day and night to contain the blaze. Ground crews and aerial support extinguished hotspots, and officials stressed that even small smoldering areas can reignite quickly.
Looking ahead, authorities plan to assess the damage, restore affected areas, and implement preventive measures. In addition, they aim to reduce future wildfire risks through improved monitoring, public education, and investment in firefighting infrastructure. Containing the Elit wildfire represents a major achievement, but it also underscores the ongoing challenges in protecting Iran’s forests.
