Iran has raised a nuclear contamination risk alarm. Specifically, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent letters to the UN. He addressed Secretary General Antonio Guterres. He also wrote to Security Council members. The letters arrived on Saturday. They warn about US-Israeli airstrikes. These strikes target Iranian civilian nuclear facilities. The Bushehr nuclear power plant is a major concern. Araghchi stated these attacks break international law. He emphasized Iran’s nuclear work has peaceful purposes. The IAEA oversees all these facilities. Therefore, any strike creates a nuclear contamination risk for the whole region.

The attacks could release radioactive material. Such a release would cause severe harm. People and the environment would suffer greatly. Araghchi argued the world cannot ignore this danger. Moreover, he noted Iran has faced two wars in nine months. Specifically, the United States led one aggression. Likewise, Israel led the other. The U.S. holds the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, Israel remains outside that treaty. Consequently, Israel does not follow its rules. Both nations attacked Iran’s peaceful nuclear sites. Unfortunately, the UN Security Council failed to condemn these acts. Similarly, the IAEA Board of Governors stayed silent. As a result, their inaction allows more strikes to happen.

US officials have made alarming statements. For example, one senior official called humanitarian law stupid. In addition, another U.S. representative said Bushehr is not off the table. These reckless comments show growing audacity. Araghchi blamed UN inaction for this behavior. Thus, the aggressors now feel emboldened. They believe no one will stop them. This situation damages UN credibility. Furthermore, it also hurts the IAEA safeguards system. The attacks began on February 28. Yet that conflict continues without any condemnation. Their silence disturbs Iranian leadership.

Strikes near Bushehr happen repeatedly. The plant remains active and operational. Any direct hit could cause a radiological release. Then that release would spread across borders. Neighboring countries would face contamination. For instance, water, soil, and air could become toxic. Therefore, the nuclear contamination risk grows with each attack. Araghchi issued a final warning. If the Security Council stays indifferent, trust will collapse. Consequently, the non-proliferation regime will weaken further. Such failure would affect everyone, not just Iran.

The US and Israel started this campaign without provocation. The attack on February 28 killed senior Iranian leaders. Among them was Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Many military commanders also died. Civilians lost their lives too. In response, Iran used force. Its armed forces launched drone and missile operations. These operations targeted US interests in West Asia. Additionally, they hit Israeli positions in occupied lands. The conflict shows no sign of ending. Consequently, the nuclear contamination risk remains high. Next steps depend on UN action. Without a strong response, more strikes will follow. Therefore, global leaders must act now.
