Iran aims to become a leading Caspian tourism hub, leveraging its cultural and historical wealth. The country offers diverse opportunities for travel, heritage exploration, and cultural partnerships. Reza Salehi Amiri, Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, highlighted this potential during a regional summit in Rasht. The event, titled “Caspian: Bridge for Friendship and Regional Development,” brought together governors from 12 provinces across five Caspian Sea countries.

The minister emphasized that Iran boasts over one million historical and cultural sites. Among them, 43,000 sites are registered nationally, while 29 enjoy UNESCO World Heritage status. Additionally, 28 intangible cultural assets and more than 58 sites have temporary UNESCO recognition. These sites reflect Iran’s rich legacy spanning over six thousand years.

Salehi Amiri pointed out that Iran’s history, literature, and traditions closely connect with neighboring countries. This cultural overlap provides a solid base for cooperation in tourism, handicrafts, and cultural exchanges. He cited Iran’s ancient civilizations, including the Achaemenid, Sassanid, and Safavid periods, and iconic sites such as Shahr-e Sukhteh and Hegmataneh. These landmarks can attract tourists while fostering regional collaboration.

The summit included five Iranian governors and seven officials from Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan. Participants engaged in general and specialized panels covering the economy, investment, transit, logistics, environment, and fisheries. The discussions focused on strengthening cross-border trade, enhancing port operations, and activating the North-South transit corridor.

In addition, the summit aimed to promote Caspian tourism hub initiatives. Officials explored ways to coordinate policies, highlight agricultural and industrial strengths, and organize joint trade exhibitions. They also discussed sustainable environmental management and regional development strategies. The meeting created a platform to align the vision of coastal provinces with broader regional goals.

Experts say the Caspian Sea region holds strategic importance for energy, trade, and tourism. By focusing on cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, and joint projects, Iran hopes to establish itself as the Caspian tourism hub. This effort promises economic growth, environmental protection, and stronger cultural ties across neighboring countries.
