Iran-China tensions intensified after a high-level diplomatic exchange addressed rising regional instability. Notably, Abbas Araghchi spoke with Wang Yi. The discussion came on day 26 of the ongoing hostilities affecting regional security. According to Araghchi, attacks began on February 28 and targeted civilian and defense infrastructure. Moreover, he blamed Washington and Tel Aviv for escalating instability across the region. As a result, he stressed that Iran-China tensions reflect broader geopolitical strain in the Persian Gulf.

Furthermore, he said Iran will defend sovereignty until strategic objectives are achieved. In addition, he added that national security actions follow international legal frameworks. Meanwhile, he linked insecurity in the Persian Gulf to continued hostilities. Consequently, Iran restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz for certain vessels. Specifically, authorities blocked ships linked to countries supporting hostile actions. However, Iran allowed passage for neutral countries under coordination procedures.

Importantly, the Strait of Hormuz remains critical for global energy flows. For example, around one-fifth of global oil trade passes through the route. Therefore, any disruption affects shipping costs and energy markets worldwide. At the same time, Araghchi criticized the United Nations Security Council for its recent resolution. He argued the council ignored the main actors behind the conflict. Instead, he said the resolution unfairly condemned Iran’s defensive actions.

Recently, the council addressed retaliatory strikes on U.S.-linked facilities. In particular, these sites operate in several Persian Gulf states. Thus, Iran argued these locations enabled attacks on its territory. Meanwhile, Araghchi urged China and Russia to oppose what he called political misuse of the council. Additionally, he asked them to support a balanced response to ongoing developments. Therefore, these statements further underscore Iran-China tensions at the diplomatic level.

In response, Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s opposition to violations of sovereignty. Moreover, he called for dialogue and respect for international law. He also warned against coercive behavior in global affairs. Additionally, China expressed condolences over the death of a senior Iranian official. Wang described the figure as influential in regional stability efforts. Furthermore, he emphasized continued diplomatic engagement to reduce tensions.

Overall, analysts say the situation raises risks for global trade and energy security. For instance, shipping insurers already factor higher premiums into Gulf routes. Consequently, markets monitor developments closely due to supply chain exposure. Looking ahead, diplomatic channels may remain active despite rising pressure. However, regional actors could push for de-escalation talks. Ultimately, continued military exchanges could prolong instability and deepen Iran-China tensions.
