Iran has made significant strides in addressing climate change despite facing international sanctions and restrictions on technology and funding, the head of the Department of Environment (DOE) said at COP30. Iran climate progress has continued even under severe economic and political challenges, the official added.
Shina Ansari, DOE chief, addressed the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, highlighting the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand renewable energy. The conference, which runs from November 6 to 21, gathers world leaders and experts to discuss climate solutions.
“In recent years, all countries present at this conference have pledged to protect the environment through renewable energy and climate adaptation,” Ansari said. Despite sanctions, Iran climate progress includes measurable achievements in solar and wind power.
Over the past year, Iran increased its solar energy capacity by 75 percent and expanded wind power generation. The country also implemented advanced flare management in oil and gas fields, reducing emissions by 10 billion cubic meters. Further reductions of 12 billion cubic meters are planned over the next four years.
Iran has also joined the BRICS carbon market and invested in transitional fuels and energy efficiency projects. These steps aim to enhance resilience against climate-related challenges, including rising temperatures and reduced precipitation over the past decades.
On the sidelines of COP30, Ansari held meetings with international counterparts, including Simon Stiell, UNFCCC executive secretary. She outlined Iran’s renewable energy projects and emission reduction measures, emphasizing the country’s readiness to share knowledge with other nations.
In addition, Ansari met with UN-Habitat’s Anacláudia Rossbach to discuss sustainable urban planning. They highlighted the need for climate-resilient cities, particularly in regions affected by heat and water scarcity. Discussions with Croatia and UAE officials also focused on environmental cooperation and joint climate initiatives.
Experts attending COP30 praised Iran’s efforts, noting that the country demonstrates resilience despite sanctions and limited access to modern technologies. These initiatives signal Iran’s commitment to global climate goals while safeguarding public health and biodiversity.
Looking ahead, Iran plans to expand renewable energy projects, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen international collaborations to meet climate targets. By sharing expertise and investing in sustainable development, Iran aims to maintain momentum in addressing environmental challenges. Iran climate progress continues to demonstrate the country’s ability to advance environmental goals despite geopolitical and economic obstacles.
