A planned Iran plot targeting Israel’s ambassador in Mexico was foiled, according to U.S. officials. Moreover, the operation, which began in late 2024, did not succeed and currently poses no threat. In addition, the alleged mastermind, Hassan Izadi, reportedly coordinated the plan through Iran’s embassy in Venezuela. As a result, authorities were able to prevent potential violence before it occurred.

The ambassador, Einat Kranz Neiger, publicly thanked Mexican authorities for preventing the attack. She emphasized Mexico’s role in maintaining regional security while dealing with complex international tensions. Israel’s Foreign Ministry also praised Mexico’s security forces for their timely intervention.

U.S. officials said the Iran plot was part of Tehran’s ongoing campaign against diplomats, journalists, and critics abroad. They noted that Iran’s history of targeting foreign figures is extensive and should concern countries hosting Iranian diplomatic missions.

The alleged plot followed Israel’s 2024 attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria, which killed several top Revolutionary Guards officers. Tehran reportedly vowed retaliation after the attack, leading to multiple military actions in the region.

According to U.S. sources, the plan involved recruiting operatives from Iran’s embassy in Venezuela. The country has maintained close ties with Tehran, allowing the Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force to coordinate operations in the region. Officials did not provide details about how the plot was contained, citing security concerns.

Iran’s embassy in Mexico denied all allegations, calling the claims “entirely false” and warning against damaging diplomatic relations. The embassy stressed its commitment to Mexico’s laws and the historical friendship between the two countries.

Experts say the incident reflects broader challenges in preventing state-sponsored attacks worldwide. The use of criminal groups and foreign operatives to carry out violent acts has become increasingly common. European and North American intelligence agencies have warned of similar Iran-linked threats over the past years.

The disruption of this Iran plot illustrates the importance of international cooperation in counterterrorism. Officials suggest continued vigilance is necessary, as Tehran has repeatedly targeted dissidents, officials, and opponents abroad. The incident also raises concerns about Iran’s influence in Latin America and the potential risks for foreign diplomats in the region.
