Iranian authorities detained a prominent Kurdish civil rights activist on Saturday during an ongoing nationwide security crackdown. Security forces transferred Mohammad Rezaei to prison in the Kurdish-majority city of Sanandaj to serve a one-year sentence. The Revolutionary Court convicted him on charges of spreading propaganda against the state due to his cultural advocacy.

This detention signals a tightening grip by Iranian authorities on minority linguistic and cultural groups across the country. Rezaei actively promotes minority language education through his work with the authorized Nozhin Socio-Cultural Association. Although the national constitution technically permits teaching minority languages, Persian remains the mandatory language for all primary schools.

Several members of this authorized socio-cultural association have faced severe judicial prosecution and long prison terms. Iranian authorities previously imprisoned language instructor Zara Mohammadi before releasing her under a broad presidential amnesty program. Furthermore, security forces recently arrested two Kurdish siblings during separate coordinated intelligence operations within Kurdistan province.

Intelligence agents reportedly entered private homes without presenting legal judicial warrants to arrest the two civil activists. This wave of operations forms part of a wider campaign initiated by Iranian authorities after recent regional conflicts. Estimates indicate that security forces have detained more than six thousand individuals since international hostilities broke out.

Government officials accuse many detainees of collecting and transmitting sensitive media files to various foreign actors. Meanwhile, domestic monitoring groups reported over two thousand executions nationwide during the preceding calendar year alone. Independent observers express deep concern that Iranian authorities are utilizing severe legal penalties to suppress public dissent. These continuous arrests highlight the challenging social climate currently facing cultural advocates and minority educators throughout Iran.
