An unlawful naval blockade by the United States has drawn an official protest from Iran. Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani condemned the move on Monday. He called it a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty. This unlawful naval blockade also threatens regional peace and security. Washington announced this naval measure on April 12. The U.S. Central Command made that public announcement.
Iravani consequently sent a formal letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He likewise wrote to the Security Council president. The ambassador stated the blockade breaks international law. He specifically cited Article 2 of the UN Charter. That article indeed prohibits threats or use of force. Iravani further described the action as an act of aggression. The blockade moreover violates the law of the sea.
The United States now wants to stop maritime traffic to Iranian ports. This action thus interferes with Iran’s sovereign rights. It also harms third-party states and legal trade. Iran therefore rejects this illegal action completely. Tehran nevertheless reserves the right to respond proportionally. Any response will follow international law. Iran will accordingly protect its national interests.
The Iranian ambassador instead held Washington fully responsible. The United States must answer for this wrongful act. These consequences include threats to global peace. Tensions have already risen in the region. Iravani consequently urged the UN to act immediately. He specifically asked the Security Council to condemn this unlawful naval blockade. He also requested steps to stop further escalation.
This dispute follows a series of events. For instance, on February 28, airstrikes killed senior Iranian officials. Iran then launched Operation True Promise 4 in response. That operation included daily missile and drone attacks. Targets included Israeli-occupied territories. Those attacks also hit U.S. military assets across the region. Iran subsequently blocked the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade targeted oil tankers from adversary nations. Iran said this move maintained security in the waterway.
The U.S. accepted a 10-point Iranian proposal on April 8. That proposal formed a ceasefire foundation. However, negotiations failed on April 12. Iranian and U.S. delegations talked for over 20 hours. The talks took place in Islamabad, Pakistan. The American side made excessive demands. As a result, no agreement came from those negotiations.
Experts see the naval blockade as economic pressure. The move targets Iran’s oil exports and maritime trade. This pressure could destabilize global shipping lanes. Iran has warned of greater instability ahead. The country reaffirms its legal rights to self-defense. Next steps nevertheless remain unclear. The UN Security Council may hold an emergency session. Iran could also challenge the blockade at international courts. Meanwhile, U.S. naval assets remain in the region. Both sides show no sign of backing down. Consequently, the unlawful naval blockade continues to escalate risks for all parties.
