Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to New Delhi this week for the BRICS ministerial session. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed this high-profile visit during a recent press briefing in Tehran. The diplomat noted that this trip emphasizes Iran’s commitment to global South cooperation. India currently holds the chairmanship of the influential bloc for the 2026 term. This meeting serves as a critical precursor to the full leaders’ summit scheduled for later this year.

Araghchi plans to engage in multiple high-level discussions with his international counterparts during the two-day event. He will meet with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss vital bilateral and regional issues. These talks come at a time of significant geopolitical shifts across the Middle East and Central Asia. The Iranian delegation seeks to strengthen its position within the expanded framework of the BRICS alliance. Iran officially joined the group in early 2024 to enhance its economic and political reach.

The upcoming session in New Delhi will gather representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Newer members, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, will also participate. This diverse group represents nearly half of the world’s population and a significant portion of global trade. Analysts expect the participants to focus on de-dollarization and alternative payment systems during their stay. Iran views these financial reforms as a way to bypass restrictive Western economic sanctions.

Spokesperson Baghaei emphasized that the visit highlights the Iranian pursuit of global South cooperation through multilateral diplomacy. He stated that Tehran remains dedicated to fostering a more balanced and fair international order. The delegation will likely propose new initiatives for energy security and maritime trade routes. These topics remain highly relevant given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global energy markets. India also shares a deep interest in maintaining stable energy supplies from the Persian Gulf region.

Recent developments in West Asia will undoubtedly dominate many of the informal sideline conversations at the summit. Araghchi intends to share the perspective of Tehran on regional stability and the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. He hopes to build a common consensus among member states regarding peaceful conflict resolution. The presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov further underscores the high stakes of this gathering. Member nations often use these forums to coordinate their responses to major international crises.

Economic statistics show that BRICS countries now contribute more to global growth than the G7 nations. This shift in power makes the New Delhi meeting a focal point for international business and political observers. Iran aims to capitalize on this trend by securing new investment deals in its infrastructure and technology sectors. The foreign minister will highlight the logistical advantages of the International North-South Transport Corridor during his presentations. This corridor connects Indian ports to Iranian terminals and then onward to Russia.

Strategic experts believe that the active role of Iran in the bloc signals a permanent pivot eastward. By prioritizing global South cooperation, the Islamic Republic finds new partners who do not demand Western-style political reforms. This approach allows Tehran to maintain its sovereignty while expanding its footprint in emerging markets. The results of these ministerial talks will likely shape the agenda for the upcoming September summit. World leaders will then gather to finalize long-term strategies for the evolving geopolitical landscape.
