The Iranian government launched a sharp diplomatic offensive against Italy following controversial remarks about regional military operations. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, explicitly accused Rome of facilitating illegal warfare against his nation. This sudden escalation followed a public disagreement regarding the exact use of European military bases.

The diplomatic friction intensified after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attempted to clarify her country’s role. Meloni stated that Rome provided logistical support to the United States military during recent operations. However, she firmly rejected claims that Italian forces directly participated in offensive actions against foreign territories.

Baghaei countered this defense by calling the distinction between direct combat and logistical support completely fallacious. The spokesperson argued that Italian logistical assistance effectively enabled the strategic deployment of Western air assets. He emphasized that providing maintenance and supply services constitutes direct complicity in violations of international law.

The dispute originated from recent comments by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Rutte initially stated that hundreds of American aircraft had utilized Italian bases during a major operation. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto quickly dismissed those remarks as an unfortunate misunderstanding.

Meloni subsequently clarified the situation by correcting the alliance chief’s initial assertions. European diplomats note that Italy hosts critical American strategic infrastructure under longstanding bilateral security frameworks. Analysts believe this public spat highlights growing European anxiety over widening conflicts in the Middle East.

Iran maintains that any form of foreign military assistance directly threatens its national security interests. Tehran officials indicated that they are reviewing diplomatic options and may soon enact retaliatory political measures. International legal experts suggest that this dispute could complicate European Union efforts to mediate ongoing regional tensions.

The friction demonstrates how technical military assistance can create severe geopolitical vulnerabilities for European nations. The international community is closely monitoring how Rome balances its alliance commitments with diplomatic damage control. Iran has signaled that future cooperation will depend heavily on European states halting all forms of military facilitation.
