Iran’s elite Quds Force commander, Ismail Qaani, visited to Baghdad to reinforce Shiite unity ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, tensions are rising within Iraq’s Coordination Framework coalition. This alliance includes several Iran-aligned political parties. Therefore, Qaani’s visit highlights Tehran’s focus on maintaining Shiite unity amid growing rivalries.

Qaani arrived in Baghdad and immediately met with key Shiite political and militia figures. Although the identities of attendees remain undisclosed, sources indicate the meetings focused on resolving disputes threatening Shiite unity. In addition, analysts suggest Qaani aimed to prevent internal splits ahead of the elections.

The Coordination Framework currently faces disputes over the alleged misuse of state resources. Moreover, some factions reportedly exploit political influence to benefit specific electoral lists. Consequently, these conflicts risk weakening Shiite unity and undermining the alliance’s effectiveness. Observers say Tehran stepped in to mediate and ensure coalition cohesion.

During the meetings, Qaani urged leaders to put unity above factional interests. He stressed closing ranks, reducing rivalries, and presenting a united front to the public. Furthermore, sources note that he offered condolences for the wife of Iraq’s top Shiite cleric. This gesture reinforced both political and social diplomacy.

Since succeeding Qassem Soleimani as head of the Quds Force, Qaani has visited frequently to Iraq. His trips aim to mediate disputes and align Shiite factions with Tehran’s strategic goals. Therefore, analysts argue that his interventions reflect Iran’s concern about the fragility of its allies. They also show the need to safeguard Shiite unity.

Key factions within the Coordination Framework include the State of Law Coalition, Fatah Alliance, and Asaib Ahl al-Haq. Although these groups assumed power after previous elections, they continue to compete for ministries and local administrations. As a result, rivalries have intensified recently, showing the fragile nature of Shiite unity.

Qaani’s visit demonstrates Tehran’s determination to protect its influence in Iraq. He encouraged collaboration and discouraged internal disputes. In this way, his goal is to prevent divisions that could weaken Shiite unity. With elections approaching, Iran’s proactive engagement may shape Iraq’s political landscape. Ultimately, it ensures continued alignment with key allies.
