Iran-U.S. diplomacy faces crisis as tensions escalate over recent military actions and stalled negotiations. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that no one can trust U.S. diplomacy after repeated attacks during talks. During an interview on Wednesday, Baghaei said the U.S. and Israel’s military actions during indirect negotiations represented a serious breach of diplomatic norms. He emphasized that Iran experienced two attacks within nine months while engaged in nuclear discussions, calling it a betrayal of diplomacy.
Baghaei also rejected claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington and Tehran had entered ceasefire negotiations. He clarified that there has been no contact between Iran and the U.S. in the past 24 days. Iranian forces continue defending the nation’s territorial integrity, he added. In recent days, multiple countries approached Iran with offers to mediate negotiations with the U.S. Baghaei confirmed that Iran responded to these requests but remains firm on defending its interests. He stressed that statements from the U.S. and Israel regarding talks cannot be considered reliable.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held meetings with counterparts from neighboring countries, including Pakistan, to discuss regional stability. Baghaei highlighted friendly intentions from these neighbors and their interest in reducing tensions. He noted that these discussions aim to ease the broader regional situation. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei confirmed that Iran will continue charging fees for safe passage.
He explained that these measures are necessary due to ongoing war-related threats and restrictions on shipping routes. He added that Iran has warned of severe consequences if any attacks target critical infrastructure, promising an immediate and effective response. The recent military escalation began on February 28 when U.S. and Israeli forces launched an offensive targeting senior Iranian figures. In retaliation, Iran conducted missile and drone strikes against U.S. installations across West Asia and Israeli positions in occupied territories.
Experts say the current crisis could further strain Iran-US diplomacy. The situation highlights the fragility of regional security and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts expect Iran to maintain defensive measures while engaging selectively with regional partners to reduce tensions. Looking ahead, the trajectory of Iran-U.S. diplomacy remains uncertain. While regional mediation efforts continue, Iran has made clear it will not compromise its defensive stance or territorial integrity. The international community is watching closely as both sides navigate this high-stakes standoff.
