Tehran condemns the European Union for imposing new sanctions on 19 Iranian officials and entities. The Iranian government called the EU’s move immoral and unlawful, saying it punishes Iran for defending itself against U.S. and Israeli aggression. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei described the sanctions as absurd, stating that they violate international law and undermine Iran’s legitimate right to self-defense. He added that the EU’s decision demonstrates complicity in supporting aggressors.

Baghaei criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for hypocrisy and double standards. He argued that the sanctions encourage further conflict rather than promoting regional stability. The EU package targets individuals and organizations accused of human rights violations during the January protests. EU member state ambassadors approved the measures, which still require formal ratification by the Council of the European Union.

The sanctions come amid ongoing hostilities following the February 28 joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran. Tehran reports thousands of casualties, including senior officials, and has launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes in the Persian Gulf and Israeli-occupied territories. Iranian military commanders have vowed sustained retaliation, signaling that Tehran will not back down. Baghaei stressed that the sanctions are part of a broader effort to punish Iran for resisting aggression.

Analysts warn that the EU sanctions could worsen regional instability and complicate diplomatic negotiations. Targeting officials during an active conflict may escalate tensions and limit opportunities for ceasefire talks. Economic observers note that renewed sanctions could indirectly affect global energy markets. Iran’s position as a major oil and gas exporter means disruptions could have worldwide consequences.

Political experts say the sanctions may also affect broader EU-Iran relations, including nuclear talks and trade cooperation. Tehran’s vocal condemnation seeks to consolidate domestic and regional support while pressuring Europe diplomatically. The sanctions mark a significant challenge to European influence in Middle Eastern conflicts.

Officials in Tehran indicate further countermeasures will follow if aggression continues. Tehran condemns the EU as part of its ongoing defense strategy, emphasizing sovereignty, accountability, and international recognition of its rights. The situation illustrates the high stakes of diplomacy amid escalating military tensions.
